Patrick emerges...

Was talking to a good influence at work today about needing to get this bike out and ride it and also try clipping in outside.  I had several things to do at home before and after dinner, so I got those done then retrieved Patrick from the basement along with my current road shoes.

First I put my right shoe on and left my tennis shoe on the left foot.  Figured out how to get my leg over the bike (still a problem at times).  Made a short, wobbly lap around the yard.   Decided to just put the left shoe on and go for it.  Now mind you I wasn't wearing any bike clothes so whatever I did was going to be short lived.  I yanked both pants legs above my knees, somehow managed to get my leg back over the bike and headed towards the road.  It was hard to get my shoes clipped in....  I guess the pedals are tighter than I thought (need to loosen them a touch).  Made it to the street.  Wandered over to the nearby nursing home and back.  Just did 2 miles of riding, but by the end I at least didn't feel like I just took the training wheels off.

Of note:  seat needs to go down and flatten a bit; pedals need to be loosened.

We shall see what bike I decide to ride on Sunday.  I know where I want to go...  will either be this one or the Cx bike.  I guess 2 miles wasn't bad since it's almost been a year since I rode this one.

The ER. Xray and introducing Builder Bob

In walks the ER doctor, “hey, what did you do, where are you from?” I crashed my bike, I probably broke my hip, I whacked my head but never lost consciousness ma’am. She, of course looked at my helmet - a few scratches, small dent but otherwise intact. Yay Giro for making good stuff and yay for a hard head. No headache so that was good. She checked other parts, nope nothing else just hip pain, some road rash on the same, both knees scraped a bit and a scrape on left elbow. During our meeting the doctor shared with me that she was a graduate of VCOM (the DO school in Blacksburg) and that she had done a brief rotation at CRMH where I worked for many years. Her name was familiar but we saw so many residents and students it would be impossible to remember them all unless they stood out for good reasons or bad. My old ER friends may remember her - Jessica Flinchum. She was super nice and friendly. Soon I was whisked away to X-ray by my ER nurse. I expressed to the nurse that I w...

Day 4 of Head Cold from Hell

Things I wish for right now: warm weather no rain no illness to feel at least 85% for more than a week to go hiking to ride my bike I don't call in sick to work, but Thursday afternoon; I told my boss I wasn't coming on Friday.  I rested and watched a ton of basketball all day yesterday.  Today I feel more energetic, but my ear is stopped up now.  Typical for when I get colds.  It will probably be this way now for months.

Post op...

So I woke up from a fog around 7pm feeling like I got hit by a truck. I reach down to my right leg because something is stuck to it. Ugh, Foley catheter holder. Well at least I don’t have to worry about how to pee for a while. I gently move my left leg. It’s there. A tad painful, but not nearly what it was earlier in the day. Mom was beside the bed. We talked for a short while before she left to make the 20 or so minute drive back to the campground. I drifted back to sleep. Rubber chicken!!!! Between the Dilaudid PCA, the scheduled Norco, Toradol, etc my pain was well controlled. Upon waking to the blood fairy Sunday morning it was time to start planning how everything was going to work to get home, but first there were goals to getting out of the hospital. The foley was taken out early in the day. That was weird. A first that I really could have went a lifetime without. I managed to eat some pretty decent food. And I laughed as I looked at the dry erase board on the wa...
