Tour de Blount as in blunt trauma

The Tour de Blount. I’m not sure how I found the TdB. I think I was probably hunting for an organized ride in TN since I had a goal of riding events in different states. Despite my dozens of trips to TN I’d only ridden my bike there once. TdB sounded good because I could combine a vacation using my fairly new travel trailer, go to a state I love and get in a ride!

We elected to stay in Townsend, TN at a campground that was literally 0.75 miles from the start! I wouldn’t have to drive to the start! This turned out to be a good thing as you will read.

On Friday I had taken the opportunity to explore the bike path that travels along the main road through town. There are two or three places where the path crosses under the road and I would use one of these Saturday morning to get to the event.

So of course the night before the ride I sleep restless as I typically do. My brain always starts to think about what I need to do in the morning in prep for a ride. I woke up early did the normal bathroom stuff. Started fixing some food. It was also Prince Harry and Meaghan Markle’s wedding day so we turned the TV on. I decided to go ahead and set the table up for Mom who was traveling with me (another good thing). The table also forms the bed on which she sleeps.

I watched a bit of the wedding broadcast while we listened to the rain fall outside. Let me pause here to say that it’s not unusual for me to ride in the rain. I had previously done two Storming of Thunder Ridge rides (75mile) in the rain. That route descends Rt 43 from the Peaks of Otter on a twisty, fast, two lane road. Never had any trouble. I’ve raced my mountain bike in the rain and snow-also no issues. As bed I can remember the weather forecast for Townsend for the day was for the rain to clear out and leave us with a nice albeit humid day. Would have been just fine for riding.

I left the campground on my bike with rain jacket on for the short ride to the visitor center. Along the way I slid just a slight bit at one of the tunnels under the road (I thought there must have been something on it). Arrived at the visitors center and huddled on the porch with other riders. I reached back and checked my back tire. It felt a bit squishy so I went to see if there was a tire pump at the bike shop tent. Sure enough. They added some air and off I went to lineup.

After some introduction and some other stuff about sponsors etc, a national anthem we were off. A police escort would take us up the main road out of town...

Busy, but haven't forgotten that I owe ya'll a post or two

I've been busy with holiday stuff... Let's see in the while I've been away from my blog.. I painted 4 rooms in my house, replaced 7 mini-blinds... I've been to Knoxville and back for the Garth Brooks concert.  Overall, it was ok.  I've seen much better Garth shows, but it was cool to be in Neyland at night with all of those people. UT needs to figure out it's ADA plan post show though - that's a joke and a long story.  One that is longer than I have time for right now. Decorated for the Christmas - I'll have to do a separate post about my Lego village. Been to Richmond, VA and back to pick up cakes for my birthday and holidays. Did a birthday bike ride for the first time in 2 years. Hoping to do the annual Christmas Light Tour ride in Grandin on Wednesday - weather permitting. The rain and cold and probably wind will return this week. Anyway, I'll be back to post more soon as oh ya, I signed up for The Appalachian Journey - ...

The ER. Xray and introducing Builder Bob

In walks the ER doctor, “hey, what did you do, where are you from?” I crashed my bike, I probably broke my hip, I whacked my head but never lost consciousness ma’am. She, of course looked at my helmet - a few scratches, small dent but otherwise intact. Yay Giro for making good stuff and yay for a hard head. No headache so that was good. She checked other parts, nope nothing else just hip pain, some road rash on the same, both knees scraped a bit and a scrape on left elbow. During our meeting the doctor shared with me that she was a graduate of VCOM (the DO school in Blacksburg) and that she had done a brief rotation at CRMH where I worked for many years. Her name was familiar but we saw so many residents and students it would be impossible to remember them all unless they stood out for good reasons or bad. My old ER friends may remember her - Jessica Flinchum. She was super nice and friendly. Soon I was whisked away to X-ray by my ER nurse. I expressed to the nurse that I w...

Post op...

So I woke up from a fog around 7pm feeling like I got hit by a truck. I reach down to my right leg because something is stuck to it. Ugh, Foley catheter holder. Well at least I don’t have to worry about how to pee for a while. I gently move my left leg. It’s there. A tad painful, but not nearly what it was earlier in the day. Mom was beside the bed. We talked for a short while before she left to make the 20 or so minute drive back to the campground. I drifted back to sleep. Rubber chicken!!!! Between the Dilaudid PCA, the scheduled Norco, Toradol, etc my pain was well controlled. Upon waking to the blood fairy Sunday morning it was time to start planning how everything was going to work to get home, but first there were goals to getting out of the hospital. The foley was taken out early in the day. That was weird. A first that I really could have went a lifetime without. I managed to eat some pretty decent food. And I laughed as I looked at the dry erase board on the wa...
