One year follow-up appointment

Saw my orthopedic surgeon today for my "one year" follow-up!

I grew A LOT of bone! Great report today! I couldn't have asked for a better doctor and team. It's hard to believe a year ago my journey with him began. He also agrees it's hard to believe a year has passed. He was pleased and impressed at how much progress I've made - in fact I'm ahead of where he thought I'd be. A lot can be said for a positive attitude, willingness to work, never giving up and turning frustrations into motivation. I have a good understanding of what's holding me back at this point and it is just going to take time. So much of the top of my femur was destroyed in the initial accident, with the first implant, it's subsequent removal and second implant. If that grows back it would be surprising, but the good thing is the muscle shadow is there and going to where it is supposed to be. Of course that's the one that's causing my limitations on hills (riding/walking), jumping, running, etc. He wished me well and told me to enjoy my summer of riding! Great doctors are hard to find and this one will be hard to top. #rebuildingme

Still very thankful to @gregfox @juliegeorge @eleanorewomac for being my first "caregivers" - also would be remiss if I didn't express gratitude to the ER, the anesthesiologist, the OR, the excellent nurses on 5 South, CNAs, and rehab folks at Blount Memorial Hospital.

The top notch, unbeatable care that I've received at CarilionClinic Orthopedics has been amazing.  I love my doctor and kind of sad that I don't get to see him anymore.  There's no way possible I could ever thank every single person at Carilion Roanoke Memorial who took care of me from my surgery on 6/6/18 until discharge on 6/11/18 - Katrina, Sarah and Shelby can all know that they had a hand in rebuilding their friend - love these ladies so much, and I know they will pass my gratitude along to the 9 West Ortho team.  Love you all so much - keep on doing excellent work and caring for the community you serve.  You all definitely displayed Carilion's values to me and I'm hopeful that everyone gets the same treatment.

I am also so very thankful for my rehab team at Lucas Therapies - Chris, Johnny, Savannah were awesome to work with 28 times!

Pat Summitt's words come to mind again...  "Success is about having the right person, in the right place, at the right time."  I was lucky to find the right people in the right places at the right times in the past year!  Love you all!

Last Saturday: MTB on the GW and Roads again - Honestly it was fun - went to Kennedy Park again then meandered my way to Lick Run GW at Countryside Park. Kennedy Park is peaceful with several paved sidewalks that you can ride back and forth (up and down slightly). Last Sunday: Hiking on Mill Mountain - started on Ivy Road, went up the old road to Big Sunny (Car Trail) to the neighborhood, back down to Crystal Spring Trail - it was fun - the old road was tiring as it's all up hill.  Big Sunny was ok except I had forgot what a muddy mess it gets on the one spot under the power line and of course it's a steep little Pitch.  I made it carefully!  The trail itself weirded me out in a few places which is stupid because I have ridden it hundreds of times.  I guess my perspective is much different now.  Walking back down through the neighborhood wasn't too bad.  My quads tend to not like downhills, but we made it.  Crystal Spring is a mostly flat trail so ...

Day 4 of Head Cold from Hell

Things I wish for right now: warm weather no rain no illness to feel at least 85% for more than a week to go hiking to ride my bike I don't call in sick to work, but Thursday afternoon; I told my boss I wasn't coming on Friday.  I rested and watched a ton of basketball all day yesterday.  Today I feel more energetic, but my ear is stopped up now.  Typical for when I get colds.  It will probably be this way now for months.

Blue Ridge Marathon - Volunteer time...

Will post more later, but sharing what I posted on the BRM Facebook page. Gonna put this here and hope the individuals see it. To the lady with the past mastectomy running the colorful lymphedema sleeve - WAY TO GO! To the runner with the med port and I swear it looked like O2 - BRAVO! And to the man with the ACL brace who still has the hobbled gait- WAY TO GET IT DONE!!! It hit me as I stood there cheering you on that we may be injured, but we don't loose our spirit. Your fight and determination did not go unnoticed. I'm so impressed, and you have provided me a bit more motivation to continue working hard in my journey back from a hip fracture. SO IMPRESSED WITH EVERYONE TODAY, but those three particularly stood out to me.
